Light-Wall Club Focal Point
Created: 04/10/10Modified: 07/28/10Author: Salsa

So I have set out to re-create this wall that I saw in the background of a commercial that was Usher's song and dance performance for the NBA Playoffs. He dances in front of an entire wall of lights. Instantly I was inspired to build my own version, I thought how great it would be for the artists to perform with such a dramatic display. So, in my head, I'm thinking,

"This is not so hard... just have rows and columns, and have the ability to control them."

1) Where am I going to get LED Lights?
Well, I youtube'd hand soldering led diode lights. It would take me a few months, but I'm willing to work hard. Luckily, when I went to an RC Store in Orem called, Hobby Habit, I met Matt and Lucas. They helped me select some connectors for a led dmx controller I had bought. My tendency is to talk about work all the time, so naturally I share with them everything I'm trying to accomplish. Well, it turns out they have a ton of LED lights sitting underneath the bed. !!! NO JOKE!!! So he says he'll sell them to me cheap, and just like that I had purchased over 300 modules of LED lights.

2) How am I Going to Control the Lights?
So, controllers are not cheap. Originally I wanted to control every single led light on the board but it was just too expensive. So I opted to control rows and columns... I youtube'd for more ideas and found some REALLY COOL other ideas, Led Touch Grass Mat and the LED Fan Sign. These will be my future projects. If you'd like to invest, let me know. So, I have no choice but to just pay the money on a group buy of control modules. The ideas of how to program them are endless.

3) How is this Light Wall Mobile?
My solution is to have the boards be mountable to posts; and that these posts, are able to be assembled and disassembled to fit into one's car. Ikea had the 'broder' shelf system that would work. It took hours and hours to get the post mounts onto the boards because the steel on the shelf system is super thick and strong. We needed to cut a portion of the steel in order to get it to work.

4) How much Power?
Now, I underestimated this one! It required over 60 amps and 12v ac dc power supply. These are not cheap. Unfortunately, no way around this.... So, naturally, we pay the money. The wiring is more complicated then this blog needs to be. If you really are interested to know come and talk to me at the club.
